Celebrate Orrington's 230th Birthday
July 13-22, 2018!
The Town of Orrington turns 230 years old on Thursday, March 21, 2018. To celebrate the special occasion, Orrington will host a 10-day town-wide Old Home Week festival from July 13 through July 22, 2018.
Old Home Week's mission is to celebrate Orrington's rich past, vibrant present and bright future with residents, former Orringtonians, friends and neighbors. It will showcase the best of Orrington: their 230-year history, distinct villages, beautiful natural resources, excellent schools, numerous businesses, churches and organizations and the friendly people.
Old Home Week events will kick-off with a huge parade down Route 15 on Saturday, July 14. The monumental Northeastern Primitive Rendezvous will return to the historic Wiswell Farm all week, with public days on July 14-15. This is the best opportunity to be immersed in pre-1840 history as guests stroll through the paths and trails of the village. Enjoy programs featuring artisans, historians, musicians, tribal life and guest speakers. Settlers will be selling their authentic foods and old-fashioned merchandise outside their tents. Guests can even test their hawk and knife throwing skills.
Operation Christmas Child will hold its New England conference in Orrington during the opening weekend and will launch their drive to locally collect 20,000 Christmas shoeboxes for needy children around the world.
The SedgeunkeDUCK Regatta returns to the babbling waters of the Sedgeunkedunk Stream on Sunday, July 15. This rubber duck race is a fundraiser for the Orrington Historical Society's Grange Hall renovation project.
Other events during the week will take place at various locations around town. The Orrington Public Library will hold their huge used book sale, the annual photography contest and exhibit, and arts and craft classes. The Grange Hall will be home to the traditional Elder's Tea, a vintage clothing exhibit, historical displays and more. The fields of Center Drive School will be home to sport tournaments, while area churches cook up baked bean suppers, BBQs, ice cream socials and events for all ages.
July 20-22 brings the much-anticipated Endless Yard Sale. This 3-day extravaganza features more than 100 yard sales on over 70 miles of Orrington byways! It is a treasure hunter's paradise that draws thousands of folks from along the eastern seaboard from Atlantic Canada to Florida.
The final weekend will also feature activities at the newly expanded Curran Homestead Village living history museum. Events include a bluegrass concert, barbecue and the Giant Yard Sale. The farm will be open for tours and activities during Maine Open Farm Day on Sunday, July 22. Orrington's Citizen of the Year will also be honored on July 22.
